The records consist of correspondence and papers of the executive directors and departmental officers relating to the establishment of programs to aid in coping with the personal and social problems caused by the spread of AIDS in the New York City metropolitan area. Included are files of the development department which raised funds from private and institutional sources; files of the publications department which published a monthly newsletter, Newsline, and a Spanish language edition, SIDAhora; files of the volunteer department which conducted a national telephone "Hotline" and a speakers bureau; and other records including minutes of meetings of the organization's board of directors; a topical file of printed ephemera; and audio-visual materials.

The People With AIDS Coalition (PWA Coalition / PWAC), was founded in New York City in 1985 by a group of some nine persons all of whom had contracted AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).
